For trips to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, about 14 km outside the city center, it is customary to hire a large sedan-style grand taxi round trip from the port.
Cash in Moroccan dirhams (MAD) is essential at traditional medina souks, small cafes, and taxis. Euro banknotes are also widely accepted.

This museum occupies Dar el Makhzen, a former palace of the Moroccan sultan. It exhibits an intricate zellij-tiled courtyard, an Andalusian-style garden, and Roman mosaics from Volubilis.

These are ancient sarcophagus tombs carved by the Phoenicians into coastal cliff rocks on Marshan Hill. Locals come here to relax and watch the sunset over the Strait of Gibraltar.

This lush park just north of Grand Socco offers a peaceful green retreat in the city, with a huge banyan tree more than 800 years old and 17th-century cannons on display.

Although this is a Christian Anglican church, its exterior and altar interior are decorated with intricate Arabic Kufic calligraphy and Islamic arabesque patterns in a distinctive expression of religious harmony.

Built in the 17th century on Tangier's highest hill, this fortress offers expansive views of the Strait of Gibraltar and Spain's Andalusian coastline through the arch of Bab El Bahr, or the Gate of the Sea.

This legation was granted by the Moroccan sultan who became the first in the world to recognize the newly independent United States in 1777. It is the only U.S. National Historic Landmark located outside U.S. territory.
With enough time in port, you can explore beyond the city. One-way times are approximate.

At Africa's northwestern tip, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, this cliff is topped by an elegant yellow lighthouse in Islamic Moorish style, built in 1864 by Sultan Mohammed IV.

According to legend, Hercules split the continents to create the Strait of Gibraltar and rested in this cave. Its huge natural opening toward the sea is famous for resembling the reversed outline of the African continent.

This wide, clean stretch of golden Atlantic beach lies beside the Cave of Hercules. It is a place to relax by clear water and refreshing Atlantic waves.

This seafood restaurant stands on an Atlantic cliff at Cape Spartel. Guests can watch the waves roll in while enjoying fresh tuna tartare, grilled lobster, and Mediterranean-style salad.

This attraction offers camel rides and seaside walks along the Atlantic cliffs, with dramatic views of the sea and waves crashing against the shore.

Tangier can trace its origins back to the Phoenicians and ancient Greeks. It was named after Tinge, the mother of Hercules’ son, and its beginnings are embedded in mythology. It was subsequently a Roman province, and after Vandal and Byzantine influences, was occupied by the Arabs with Spain, Portugal, France and England also playing a part in the city’s history. With such a diverse past it is perhaps not surprising that Tangier is such an individual city. Overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, the city lies on a bay between two promontories. With its old Kasbah, panoramic views, elegant buildings, squares and places of interest, there is much to discover in both the new and old parts of the city.
