If you have booked a cruise that says it departs from Rome, there is one thing you need to know first: the ship does not leave from central Rome. The departure port for Rome cruises is Civitavecchia, a port city on the Tyrrhenian Sea about 70–80 km from central Rome. If you do not know about this distance and leisurely have lunch in Rome before setting out, you may find yourself in a rush.
This guide walks you through the day before embarkation and the morning of your Civitavecchia cruise. It covers whether to stay in Rome or the port city, how to get there from the airport, and what to do and when on embarkation morning. Times and fares are included only when verified against official information.
The short answer: arrive the day before, and first decide where to stay

When the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) surveyed around 4,000 cruise passengers across 8 countries in 2022, 69% said they stayed at least 1 night before boarding. For a trip from Korea, this overnight stay is practically essential. Long-haul flights can be delayed, and if you booked the cruise separately, the cruise line will not take responsibility for helping you join the ship at the next port if your flight is late. Unlike flights booked through the cruise line, if a separately booked flight is delayed, travel to the next port is your responsibility.
Civitavecchia requires one more decision than other ports: whether to spend the night before in Rome or in Civitavecchia. This choice completely changes your trip on embarkation morning.
The layout of Civitavecchia Port: what you need to know
Civitavecchia Port is quite large, and the cruise berths are some distance from the port entrance. A free shuttle runs between Largo della Pace, the square at the port entrance, and the cruise berths. If you arrive by train, it takes 10–15 minutes to walk from Civitavecchia station to Largo della Pace (according to Princess Cruises).
In short, the route by train is: Rome city station → Civitavecchia station → walk to the port entrance → free shuttle → your ship's terminal. If you take a taxi, you can go directly to the terminal. Check which berth and terminal your ship uses in the cruise line's boarding documents or app.
Where to stay the night before: two options
1. Central Rome (if you also want to see the city)
If you want to spend even one day exploring Rome, staying in the city center is a natural choice. Look for accommodation near Roma Termini or Roma San Pietro stations. Both are served by trains to Civitavecchia, and the journey takes about 60–80 minutes. However, on embarkation morning you will need to take a train, walk, and then use a shuttle in sequence, which can be tiring if you have a lot of luggage.
2. Civitavecchia (the most convenient if you are focused on boarding)
Staying in Civitavecchia the night before makes the journey on embarkation morning shorter. You will not need to worry about train delays or traffic in Rome, making it a good choice for first-time cruisers or families with a lot of luggage. If you want to see Rome too, you could spend two days in Rome and move to Civitavecchia for your last night.
Either way, ask your accommodation in advance whether it offers luggage storage after checkout and can call a taxi in the morning. In a small city, it may be difficult to find a taxi on the street.
How to get from the airport to your accommodation
There are nonstop flights from Incheon to Rome Fiumicino Airport on selected days of the week (according to Asiana Airlines' announcement; check operating days when booking). From Fiumicino Airport, you can travel as follows.
- To central Rome: The Leonardo Express connects the airport and Roma Termini in 32 minutes without stopping. It usually runs every 15 minutes and every 30 minutes at some times; the fare is €14.
- By train to Civitavecchia: There is no direct train from the airport to Civitavecchia. You have to take a regional train toward Rome and transfer at an intermediate station to one bound for Civitavecchia, which we do not recommend after a long flight with large luggage.
- Taxi: The City of Rome sets fixed fares for airport taxis. As of the date checked, the fare is €55 from Fiumicino Airport to central Rome within the Aurelian Walls and €130 to Civitavecchia Port. Fares may change, so ask the driver whether the fixed fare applies before getting in.
If you are staying in Civitavecchia, taking a taxi directly from the airport is the simplest option. If you are traveling with several people, the cost per person is not too high.
How to get moving on embarkation morning

Use this as your reference time on embarkation day: the arrival time slot selected in your cruise line app or during online check-in. Royal Caribbean advises passengers to arrive during their selected time slot; Holland America accepts check-in from noon until 1 hour 30 minutes before departure; and MSC closes check-in 2 hours before departure. Count backward using your cruise line's specified time.
If you are leaving from central Rome
- leave your accommodation at least 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours before your arrival time slot. This allows for the 60–80-minute train ride, a 10–15-minute walk from the station to the port entrance, waiting for and riding the shuttle, and extra time in case you miss a train.
- Buy your train ticket the day before and check service status again just before departure.
If you are leaving from Civitavecchia
- leaving your accommodation about 1 hour before your arrival time slot is enough. Ask your accommodation to arrange a taxi directly to the terminal.
Either way, pack your passport, boarding documents, essential medication, and a change of clothes for the day in your carry-on. Porters will take larger bags at the terminal and deliver them to your cabin a few hours later.
The first few hours after boarding

Your cabin may not be open immediately after boarding. If you pack a swimsuit or a change of clothes and a charger in your carry-on, you can have lunch and explore the ship comfortably while you wait.

All passengers must take part in a safety drill before departure. Follow the cruise line's instructions for the format and timing. Since this first day follows a long-haul flight, it is a good idea to rest early on the first night so you are ready for the next day's port visit.
What to check so you do not miss your ship

- Departure port name: Even if it says “Rome,” the departure port is Civitavecchia. Check the port and terminal in your boarding documents.
- Choosing where to stay: Near a train station if you are staying in Rome; Civitavecchia if your focus is boarding.
- Arrival time slot and check-in cutoff: Many cruise lines close check-in 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours before departure.
- Train service status: Check again on embarkation morning and allow enough time in case you miss a train.
- Flight arrival date: Avoid arriving on embarkation day; arrive at least the day before.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I go straight to the cruise port from the Rome airport?
If you arrive the day before and stay overnight, you can take a taxi from accommodation near the airport. However, we do not recommend flying in on embarkation morning and going straight to the port. If your flight is delayed, there are few alternatives.
How long does it take to get from central Rome to the port by taxi?
The distance is about 70–80 km, so the journey time varies considerably with traffic. Unlike airport taxis, taxis from central Rome to the port do not have a fixed fare, so it is safer to book in advance through your accommodation and confirm the price.
Can I fly home on the same day I disembark in Civitavecchia?
Disembarkation ends later than the ship's arrival time, and you also need time to travel from the port to Fiumicino Airport. For guidance on choosing a flight on disembarkation day, see Flights on Cruise Disembarkation Day: What to Check When Planning Your Trip Home.
Plan the days before and after around your cruise dates
Cruise itineraries departing from Civitavecchia are listed on the Civitavecchia Port page. If you have already chosen a cruise, the Cruise Planner can help you coordinate flights, accommodation for the night before, and a day plan at port according to your departure date and port. For guidance on when to return to the ship from a port, see Why Start with the All-Aboard Time.
